How to Grill New Foods for your Barbecue

How to GrillMost people, they think about a barbecue. They think of ribs, chicken wings, kebabs, pork, burgers – you know the drill. How about lettuce or pound cake? As strange as it might seem to think of these items as part of a great smoky outdoor’s barbecue, more people than you could imagine have tried these and discovered that they go outstandingly well on a grill. The matter is, people know how to grill all your standard barbecue stuff. Once in a while, throwing something unconventional on there – pizza, fruit or anything else – it can be such a remarkable surprise, you are sure to win over new converts with your sense of theater and adventure. Here are a couple of expert ideas on how to turn your grill over to some new foods.

Let’s start with something that would not that unconventional - seafood. Grilling mussels, in reality, has turned rather trendy these days. On a wood-fired barbecue grill, the smokiness adds to the flavor of these crustaceans in a remarkable way. If a gas grill is all you have though, that would not be anything to be bothered about either. If you are wondering about how to grill mussels to the best effect, begin by opening each one, coating them in olive oil and some spices. Prepare this mixture with the juice of a few lemons, a clove of crushed garlic, a little bay seasoning, a cup and half of olive oil, salt and pepper and a handful of chopped parsley. Toss the opened mussels in this mixture and throw them on their grill. They will cook well in their own juices. Once they are nicely done, coat them in the rest of the dressing you have. You are sure to start a trend in your neighbourhood with your unconventional barbecues.

A nice crispy grilled salad with grilled butter lettuce will bring a nifty new flavor to your cookout. Get half a cup of buttermilk, a quarter cup of crème fraîche, a few tablespoons of mayonnaise, a couple of tablespoons of fresh chives, and a spoon of lemon juice. Get them all in a bowl and whisk them all at once. Add a bit salt to season. Now comes the part where you learn how to grill the stuff. Set up the grill and heat it up to medium-high. Oil up the grill grates with a bit vegetable oil, pick up half ahead of butter lettuce, sprinkle with a little of salt and lay down on the grill with the cut side facing the heat. In approximately few minutes, that side should be nicely browned and wilted. Pick it up, coat with the dressing mixture you just made and serve.

Going slightly away from conventional route, pound cake is eminently possible on a grill. It could be a great way to end your cookout – with a grilled dessert. What you need are a few thick slabs of lime pound cake, raspberry sorbet, and sweetened coconut gratings all nice and toasted. To get going, prepare your grill to a medium level of heat. Lay your pound cake slices on the grill and cover everything up. Wait for around 3 minutes. Until the pound cake is nicely barbecued and has a dark grill burn marks. Turn them over, wait additional 3 minutes and serve your special dessert with a scoop of sorbet and with coconut sprinkled over each piece of cake. It will have everyone going crazy.
