For this reason, the body concerned may limit access to public records except in specific cases. Some of the information that may not be available for all and sundry includes jail reports, census, phone addresses, postal addresses, bankruptcy reports and many more. Occasionally, people prefer to get these reports for reasons such as when investigating suspicious partners, searching missing persons, seeking friends,they lost contact with or trying to reach distant members of the extended family. Due to the confidentiality status of this information, most people don’t know how to get the particular data they are looking for. This is because of the classification of the departments handling the reports. The location of the offices and other technicalities involved. However, getting these reports doesn’t have to be deadening.

Since most of the organizations have gone online, a person can gain access to public records through the internet.

The Federal Freedom of information Act gives people the liberty to get some reports from the federal agencies, while reports from the state agencies are under the state. Before starting this process, a person should research widely to identify the department or body that has the information being sorted. For example, if a person is looking for bankruptcy information, it’s important to check the information is stored under which department. This will make it easy for the person to approach the relevant authorities rather than embarking on a wild goose chase. Additionally, the person should find out if the information is available. It’s possible to find that the information presumed to be available is not for general viewing. This can happen for classified files.

On the same note, a person should know where the information can be discovered. Does it mean the person has to go to the offices physically? Can the information be sourced through the internet? The place dictates by the type of information to be found there. For example, marriage information can be sourced from the church. If the person wants information relating to property, it’s available from the state agency responsible for property. The next step is to make the request official by sending a letter to the department. The intention must be clear or the access to public records‘ request won’t be allowed because a person may use the information wrongly. If the request is not granted, a person can seek the services of an attorney to find other ways of getting the information or to pursue the same method. If the personnel in the department are troublesome, a person can go to the head personnel to make the request. In a few cases, a person will meet some charges before getting access to the public records, but this varies.
