In order to get married, you have to have your birth certificate and proof of prior divorce if it isn’t your first marriage. You may have a birth certificate, but it may not be the legal one. Most hospitals would give out ceremonial ones while the real one is filed with the state in which you were born. Check if your copy is the original. If not, you are going to have to contact the agency in your state that handles vital records to get a copy of whatever you need. This will be true any time you need a legal copy of any records.

Vital records are also something that you may use when you’re working on putting together your family history by researching your family tree. Most that are into genealogy find that working with vital records is among the best ways to be sure they are on the right track. Most of the records for your ancestors are not going to be in the same places as yours are. They are easier to get when the person is deceased, with many being online now just for those that are looking up ancestors for this reason. Look online for information on all records so that you know where to go and for what you’re searching.
