What Ethics Guide a Massage Therapist?

Massage TherapistMassage therapist has been there since time immemorial. Though the ways of providing this service have revolutionized with time, the basic expectations in this profession don’t change. The primary work of this professional is to aid in healing or relaxing the client’s body through touch. He or she needs to contact the client’s body to loosen up the tissues and muscles and make the skin relax. For that reason, it’s important for this person to have the right and adequate training on such matters and have the ability to provide the services. Before a massage, therapist starts working on a client, the client needs to give consent. This means that the client will be aware of the kind of service, the cost and even the duration. With that information, he or she can give consent, and the service provider will guarantee that the service paid for is put up adequately.

On the same note, the client has the right to agree to get the service, or he can opt out. If the session is going on and the client opts out, he or she has every right to do that, still, the massage therapist also has the right to stop the session reasonably. This professional is as well required to maintain confidentiality of the information about the client. Any information he or she may have about the client’s personal details, physique and service information shouldn’t be transmitted to any other person. It might not even be appropriate to meet with the client in public. The massage therapist also needs to work within some boundaries. These limitations include the level to which he or she will touch a client. The client may be reserved and may have some levels to which the session can go. If the client doesn’t state this openly, the client may show it. This can be through the body language when the session begins. If the client is shy about some of the areas, the professional needs to think about avoiding them or if that is the service, then it’s important to inform him or her why it is necessary to involve those parts.

A professional massage therapist should avoid any interference when the session is on.

That is why the setup should ensure that only one client receives the service at a time in that room. These professionals are also not supposed to have sexual relationships with the clients in the guise of sessions. In case the client has a medical condition, the session should only continue if it’s possible to avoid any contact with that part. Once the session is over, he or she should inform the client to get medical help. If the situation is bad, the session shouldn’t continue because the health of the client, and the massage therapist may be in risk. When it refers the massaging manner, parts of the body that are not getting the service shouldn’t be exposed or touched unnecessarily. This will lower the client’s dignity. Observing these rules of thumb will enhance a good relationship between the professional and the client.
