What Your Sleep Habits Say About You

Sleep HabitsSleeping seems pretty simple. It’s something that everybody has to do, and without it, you simply can’t function well. Athletes need it to repair and build muscle. Teachers need it to recharge for some other challenging day, and everyone needs it to do their best daily. Just try going without sleep awhile and see how you are fair. At any rate, while everybody sleeps, everyone also sleeps otherwise. You have sleep habits that are all your own, and they can mean a good or bad night of sleep. There can be things you can do to adjust if you understand the problems.

Some sleep habits are good, and some are bad. One way to tell if you have good habits is to check how you feel each morning and how tired you feel when you get up. If you’re always so tired, you feel grumpy when you wake up in the morning, you probably do not have good sleep habits. If you never have any energy, or if you always want to nap, your habits need to be changed. These may not be things that you’re doing on purpose, but they’re things that you want to change if you can for the betterment of your health. Try going to bed just one hour earlier and see if that doesn’t clear things right up.

Anxiety can play a huge role in bad sleep habits. Usually, if you have trouble sleeping, or if you wake often in the night and can’t get back to sleep, you have issues with anxiety. The biggest problem with anxiety is that your brain is turned on with thoughts of what may go wrong, memories of what did go wrong, and overall stress of the day. When your brain keeps moving when you want to shut it down so that you can relax, you cannot sleep. See your doctor about your anxiety, because when it keeps you up and affects your sleep habits, it affects your health.

Your bad sleep habits and inability to fall asleep may not have anything to do with anxiety.

It could be some minor things that you have trained your brain to need. Some people can’t block out sounds well, and need to have white noise on. If they don’t have it, they can’t fall asleep. Some have fallen asleep in front of a television for so long that they can’t rest without one. If you marry a person with opposite habits, there are going to be issues about sleep habits that pop up. Try to find new ways to get what you need to sleep without waking your partner or without keeping them awake.

Some sleep habits are just things that we started doing when we were young, and they continue into adulthood. Maybe you have to sleep with your head near a window, or perhaps you have to have three pillows. These sleeping habits are harmless, but they can make it hard to sleep anywhere but in your own bed. Some sleep habits, like sleep walking, can be dangerous however, so make sure you have plans in place in the event you start to walk. A sleep specialist can help with this type of habit or disorder so you can be safe in the night.
